Achievements
During and after her reign of Miss America 1995, Heather accomplished many things to improve her life, and the lives of others. Immediately after crowning her successor, it was very important to Heather to return to Jacksonville State University to complete college despite being among one of the only hearing impaired students. She rediscovered her relationship with God which led to the publishing of her three books: Let God Surprise You: Trust God With Your Dreams, Listening With My Heart, and Believing in the Promise. She spoke at National Republican Conventions in 1996 and 2000 as a volunteer for Republican causes for Bob Dole and George W. Bush. She then became a congressional aide to Speaker Newt Gingrich, where she met her husband, John McCallum, whom she now has three children with. She was appointed to the National Council on Disability, became a board member for the Helen Keller Foundation for Research and Education, and a part of the Advisory Council for the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders. She appeared on many television shows like CNN, Good Morning America. and The View and can be found in People Magazine and USA Today. She also filmed two public service announcements for "Dogs for the Deaf", and became a spokesperson for the Starkey Hearing Aid Foundation and Cochlear America. Her biggest achievement was spearheading the largest multimedia public campaign to identify early hearing loss in the nation. She continues to go around the country as an inspiration and mentor to those who need motivation to get back on the right track in life through similar messages seen in her S.T.A.R.S Program.
